First-Ever Buffer Stop Dynamic Impact Test for Indian Metro System
Overview
Kolkata Metro Railway, India’s first metro system, has long been a benchmark for urban transit infrastructure. As the network continues to expand and modernise, ensuring the highest safety standards at terminal (dead-end) locations remain critical.
To support this, Oleo supplied a sliding friction buffer stop designed to safely absorb high-energy impacts under extreme operating conditions. This project marked a significant milestone: the first-ever dynamic impact test of its kind in an Indian metro system.
Challenge
The objective was to validate buffer stop performance under the most demanding metro loading conditions in India. The test parameters were unprecedented:
- Impact speed: 25 km/h
- Train mass: 553 metric tonnes
- Application: Mainline metro track
This represented the highest-capacity metro impact scenario ever tested in the country. The challenge was not only to design a system capable of safely absorbing this energy, but also to demonstrate its reliability to operators and regulatory authorities.
Our Approach
To build confidence ahead of physical testing, Oleo employed high-fidelity digital train simulation. This allowed precise modelling of:
- Train dynamics during impact
- Energy absorption characteristics
- Structural response of the buffer stop system
These simulations played a critical role in validating the design and assuring stakeholders that the live test could be conducted safely under controlled conditions.
The Test
The dynamic impact test was successfully carried out under real-world conditions, with a 553MT metro train impacting the buffer stop at 25 km/h.
Results
- No damage to track infrastructure
- No damage to rolling stock
- No damage to the buffer stop system
- Full compliance with functional and safety requirements
The outcome demonstrated exceptional system robustness and validated the effectiveness of Oleo’s sliding friction technology in high-energy scenarios.
Certification & Compliance
All railway products in India must meet the stringent standards set by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). Oleo is proud to be the only company in the Indian market to have achieved RDSO approval across its product range.
This certification underscores:
- Technical excellence
- Proven safety performance
- Compliance with national railway standards
Conclusion
This project sets a new benchmark for metro safety in India. By successfully delivering and validating a buffer stop system under the highest loading conditions, Oleo has reinforced its position as a leader in energy absorption solutions for rail.
